Happy New Year to all club members. Here's hoping 2010 is a fantastic photographic year for all.

The 2010 programme is now on the blog along with definitions for our "set subjects' and dates for club outings.

Venues and times for club outings are still to be finalised - so if you have a favourite photographic place and would like to host an outing let one of the committee members know.

Christmas Outing - 2009

Hello fellow photo tragics.

Well! After a successful year at the club, we capped off the year with a gathereing of the "Clan" at the Harry Bowey Reserve for a BBQ picnic.

Club members welcomed Alberto's inlaws from Italy and by all accounts, dispite the language barrier, they enjoyed the day.

After we had consumed a sutable amount of food, the conversation soon got around to "my lens is bigger than your lens" type of talk when a Tawney Frongmouth was spotted in a tree directly above Alberto's head. Before you could blink an eye lid the poor bird had been shot at least 20,00 times

Whilst this was happening, a fire was started by some kids nearby on the other side of the creek. Well! This event was like a magnet to all the cameras present.

The Fire Brigade and the Police came and the fireies did their thing and put the fire out. The Police took a statement from Lynn who saw it start; we heard later that the Police had caught the culprits neaerby.

Let it be known that Pat Tapping was a little disappointed that the Firemane would not take their shirts off.

Having experienced such excitement we continued to enjoy the Club picnic till about three that afternoon at which point Carole & I wished everybody a very good Xmas season and headed for home.

A very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all the club members.

CONDITIONS

1. Entries will only be accepted from members of the SAPF, affiliated clubs and other affiliations.
2. Maximum of four entries per author.
3. Greatest care will be taken of all entries but no liability will be accepted for any loss or damage.
4. All work must be that of the author.
5. The title, author’s name, address and telephone number to be shown on the lower left back of prints.
6. Size of prints:

A maximum of four (4) prints may be entered as follows:-

A maximum size of 16” x 20” (40cm x 50 cm) including mount and no smaller than A4 (21cm x 29.7cm) with a mount no larger than

25cm x 35cm.

Prints can be either colour or monochrome.

All prints must be mounted or have a firm backing .

Mounts on wood, glass, or metal and framed photographs will not be accepted.

7. There is no entry fee.
8. Subject matter is open with due consideration to the venue where the exhibition is being held.

The Centennial Park Cemetery Authority will provide the following awards.

ACC v PCC Interclub Competition

ADELAIDE CAMERA CLUB V PARA CAMERA CLUB

INTERCLUB COMPETITION - 2009

Six Para Camera Club members packed their water bags for the long haul into North Adelaide (they always say it’s a long trip to Elizabeth), where the Adelaide Camera Club hosted us for this years interclub. It was a hot Tuesday night, so Yvonne, Stephen, Lew, Greg, Andy & I were grateful of the air-conditioned club rooms – what luxury!

The competition between the two clubs is usually keenly contested. Thanks to all who offered photos for this exhibition, including some of our members who may not have been involved in this competition before. Kath Matthews & Gary Campbell’s nature images featured heavily, John Coates & Alberto Giurelli had entered fresh new ideas & Lyn Wells, Sharon Miller, Barbara Helps & Pam Brock chipped in with some good scores.

Well done to our members who received high scores of 9’s or 10’s.

We started well in the print section, but eventually A.C.C. finished with 197 points to our 190. As usual very close, however A.C.C. cleaned us up in the E.D.I. section 204 points to our 186 points. A.C.C. retained the Interclub shield with a total of 401 points to the P.C.C. 376 points. The point’s differential didn’t reflect the close comparison of the two clubs standard of photography. I guess that is how judging goes sometimes, we will be competing again next year on our home turf. For the full results see bellow.

Workshop - Panorama and HDR

Howdy,

We have had numerous requests to run specific Panoramic and High Dynamic Range imagery workshops and now we have a time and date for the course. Mark it in your diaries, December 5th.

This is a one day workshop located in the Adelaide City Centre. We will spend the morning shooting the streets of Adelaide and after lunch will hit up the gallery space as Photographic Wholesalers to learn how to put all those shots together.

This is a jam-packed photo extravaganza with loads of hands on tutorials in the field as well as in the digital darkroom on how to get those images to blend together seamlessly. Demystifying the processes for both HDR and Panos.

We will also have the expert knowledge of the PW's staff on hand to help with any equipment related questions and a bunch of gear from Manfrotto to have a play with.

Garden Island Yacht Club Outing

At 9:30 am on Sunday, 25th October, about 20 members of the Para Camera Club met up at the Garden Island Yacht Club. This monthly club outing was at the suggestion of club member, Malcolm Siddall. Malcolm is a member of the yacht club and felt that the location afforded photographic opportunities for the members of Para. Some more enthusiastic members decided to leave their beds early in the morning so that they could take advantage of the sunrise.

The day was overcast, which meant that images of masts outlined against a blue sky were not going to happen. The yacht club has a large number of yachts of varying sizes, colours and ages. The yachts also varied from having clean simple lines to those with lots of character. Our club members went off in all directions up and down the floating pontoons where the yachts were moored.

Malcolm proudly showed off his yacht "True North" and several members imagined themselves steering it across the oceans. Malcolm described the work that he had put into building his first yacht "Speed of Hydro", a large steel hulled boat that was still moored at the club.

While we were there we had a visit from two of the Port River's dolphins. Some of our members were in the right spot at the right time, but for most of us they were swimming around the next pontoon.

After everyone had finished taking their images, we adjourned up to the club rooms where we had morning tea. Malcolm's wife had been busy in the kitchen so we were spoilt with savoury scones and Anzac biscuits.

As we left, one of our club members mentioned an old rotting boat that he had come across in an adjoining Small Boats Club yard. Several of us went to find it, and after getting permission to enter the yard, we spent some time trying to get the perfect image of a dilapidated old boat.

Our thanks go to both Malcolm for organising this outing, and to his wife for providing us with morning tea. Thanks also to Michael and Pat Tapping for coordinating the outing. We also found out why Pat was so smartly dressed for a photographic shoot, it was her birthday and she and Michael were heading off for lunch.

PCC Photographic Activity - Photo Shoot
Sunday Morning of the 25th October 2009

Time: 9:30am
Location: Garden Island Yacht Club

Important: Please DO NOT board any of the vessels unless invited to do so by the owner!! This condition is for Public Liability Insurance reasons.

Also for those who may want to meet earlier (sunrises at 6:22 am) we suggest you meet at the nearby Fisherman's Dock/Sunday Market for an early shoot and maybe breakfast. Then Move to the Garden Island Yacht Club at 9:30am sharp for the main meet up.

This activity is courtesy of teh Commodore of the Garden Island Yacht Club and fellow PCC member Malcom Siddall who is also a member of the yacht club.

How to get there.

Directions from Elizabeth Way/Town Centre to Torrens Island Power Station, Access Bridge - approx 25.3 km - about 44 minutes.

Head southeast on Elizabeth Way towards Gillingham Road - 1.1km
Turn right at Philip Highway
at the roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto John Rice Avenue
Continue on Salisbury Highway
Continue on Port River Express
Continue on Francis Street
Turn right on Ocean Steamers Road
Turn right at Eastern Parade
Turn left at Grand Trunkway
Turn right immediately aftet going over Road Bridge Before the Power Station
The Garden Yacht Club is about 500m on the left - Follow the signs

Those "Early Birds" who want the Fisherman's Dock and Sunday Markets at 6:22am turn left before the bridge to the Power Station

Remember to be at the Yacht Club at 9:30am and maybe YOU will score a boat ride up the channel??

The Squarkels Return by Yvonne Hill

Using a number of various images Yvonne Hill has created quite an "unusual" bird. She has kindly shared her creative efforts in photo montage in a "how to" tutorial.

Yvonne writes "The imaginary birds in this composite look to me as if they are looking around after returning from a long way away, but that is just my imagination. My husband says he has always had suspicions about me but now he is sure I am mad!"

Snap-a-thon

Hi All

The original date for the Hahndorf Snapathon 2009 was not convenient for the majority of the Para Camera Club members so it was changed to August 30^th.with the revised date proving to be popular as 17 members attended along with family and friends pushing the total attendance to 31.

On arrival and with a procession of cars through the somewhat conjested and Full Car Park of the Old Mill Resturaunt we were directed to report to Pat Tapping to receive our instructions for the day. Our brief was to take as many photos as possible within the Categories Listed and with also a German Theme (where possible) using the main street and surrounding areas of Hahndorf. Plus Four Mystery images contain in envelope, one A4 size max.to be selected for the Judging Night on the 16th September. Once everyone was briefed on what was required we all headed off in search of some great pics (hopefully).

It wasn’t long before we were aware of the wonderful opportunities to photograph the colourful variety of Australian and German gift and souvenir shops as well as the many food and beverage shops. While this was a great place for photos many of us took time out to admire some of the items on sale and to sample of the local produce available and chat to the friendly sales staff who were equally interested in finding out about our club... Prior permission had been sought from several retailers regarding photography by our organisers and our presence and requests take photos was given and gratefully received .

As well as the unusual shops and buildings in the area there were many visitors who were enjoying the sights and the local hospitality which also presented many opportunities for some great pics for our club members in mainly ideal weather with a little drizzle at the end of the day.

After a few hours the group finally made their way to the end of the main street of Hahndorf to Ottos Bakery filling it to almost full capacity and for a well earned coffee and a chat with other club members to discuss the images we had taken during the afternoon and then head home after a wonderful outing.

Many thanks to Pat and Michael Tapping who organized the snapathon and for those who were unable to attend you missed out on a good afternoon.

What is in a name?

What is in a name?

Nothing, if you accept that the title of an image is not disclosed until the score for the piece has been determined by a judge.

I consider that the name, title or caption of an image is a vital part of any particular piece of work.

While judges are not supposed to weight the title in scoring, it is possible that a particularly good title or a really bad title may influence the result.

I suggest that a title is a very small part of the many things that any judge may take into consideration. A good image with a poor title should be downgraded – that is justice. A poor image will not be improved with the best title ever.

As a member of the audience I have a strong preference for disclosing titles before display. The judging of the abstract set topic has shown that titles do help a judge in determining what author intended.

No More Kodachrome

The Para Camera Club cannot let the passing of a photography legend without comment.

Eastman Kodak have announced that they will cease production of Kodachrome film after 74 years.

I would think that there is hardly anyone who has been or is a member of the club who has not used Kodachrome at some stage in their photography. I know there must have been countless Kodachrome images projected in the monthly competitions since the club began. I know I have cupboards full of them!

I remember well sending my film off to Kodak in that yellow envelope and then waiting patiently for a week or more to get back my slides to see if any were worth putting in the next Competition. Mostly there were none but heres a couple I have just scanned - Kodachrome 64 from 1991.

Para Wirra Outing - 13 September 2009

Hi All

Please find below a map of the Park Location and the Park with all walking tracks. (Click on the image to view then save and print the image for you own use)

I thought it might be best to meet outside the front entrance as that is the easiest place to find at 9:30. We will then proceed to the Mack Creek car park to hopefully find lots of orchids out. We will then walk along the track adjacent to the road as this has a good variety or orchids and other flowers. There will be plenty of other flowers out.

It has been suggested we have a barbeque lunch. Up to you if you choose to stay for lunch. There are free gas and electric barbeques located around the park. Two nice spots are by the lake or for the little kids a better spot is on the North Oval where there is some playground equipment. It is also less of a worry looking after the little ones so that is my suggestion for the barbeque location.

There is an entrance fee of $5 per car to enter in the front gate. I am going to see if I can hopefully get that waved for us.

I will stay at the park all day and if in the afternoon anyone would like a guided tour around the park to my favourite spots I am happy to do so.

I am attaching also an article I wrote for our newsletter which gives a table with when and where I have photographed orchids. Flowering times will vary over different seasons. Most of the native orchids are quite small so have your close up gear.

There are quite a few emus in the park and we may be lucky to see some with babies. There is also a heritage site - Lady Alice mine which you may also like to visit. If you like landscapes the best walk is the Devils Nose walk.

Please remember we are in a bush environment and wear appropriate clothing - long pants, appropriate covered footwear and long sleeves, hat, water and sunscreen. I do not want to scare you but there are snakes in the park (I have only seen 2 in 4 years ie 1/2 a snake per year over hundreds of visits) but they are there. If they see you first they will make sure they get out of your way. However when they first come out of hibernation they are often very slow, sluggish and their poison is much stronger and they are easier to step on so make sure you look where you are putting your feet. If you do come across a snake moving keep perfectly still and it will just keep going on its way. Many native plants are also very thorney so long pants is a must.

When photographing flowers please check around to make sure you are not stepping on other plants while taking photos.

I am looking forward to a great day with the sun out. The sun orchids only come out when a certain temperature is reached however there are still lots of others orchids.

Football Outing.

A healthy group of photographers had eagerly gathered in front of the main entrance of the “Mighty Gawler Central Football Club”, awaiting late comers (me). When we were ready, we staggered towards the gates loaded with enthusiasm and gear. The attendant on the gate let us all through at no charge, probably intimidated by all our equipment.

After carefully finding a spot on the fence, we started showing off our tripods and cameras and just as we were ready to take the first shots the “Bloke” out of the red Commodore told us off for standing in his way so we packed up and moved along the boundary holding our tail firmly in between our legs.

We didn't let it discourage us, in fact pushing on further (some watching our back) we settled against the fence closer to the midfield, with a better light angle. Some eventually chose to scatter around the ground, others stuck together. Regardless we all found ourselves in the end, just before leaving.

It was an excellent learning opportunity and another great excuse to be with friends taking photos. I really enjoyed pushing myself and my equipment in an action packed environment. I really hope that all that attended had as much fun as I did and thank you for those involved for making my family and my international guests feel welcome.

Stefano, the Italian chap, still hasn’t figured out what he saw......

SALA Youth Photographic Exhibition

Thursday night 6th of August at 6 pm The SALA Youth Photographic Exhibition was launched at the Munno Para Library.

The Para Camera Club was invited to represent our club on opening night, a table was supplied for us to display some of our photos and to give out pamphlets, Gary, Dave, Steph and myself represented our club on the night.

The young people of the Playford Council were given disposable cameras and were asked to take 24 shots in 24 hours of their interpretation of what living in the Playford area means to them.

The winner was presented with a gift from the Mayor of Playford

Martin Lindsell, Dave Lamplough gave a short speech on behalf of our club and presented an achievement award to the runner up. This was a years subscription to our club next year 2010 and an invitation to attend a meeting on the first Wednesday of the month to meet club members.

The exhibition will run for two weeks, from the 7^th - 14^th August at the Munno Para Library, and at the Playford Civic centre from 16^th-28^th August. All are welcome to take a look at the work of our Youth of today.

At the Para Camera club recent “Blue Sky Thinking” meeting, the subject of Photoshop© image editing was discussed. Also discussed, it seems the club is encouraging members to prepare “before & after” examples from club outings. So, on a half day photo shoot with a fellow member to the SA Rally in Mt Crawford Forest, I thought I would share this photo with you.

The subject of Photoshop© editing is contentious which opens up many questions and healthy discussions.

Top of the list is:

“Is this photography”?
“Is it art”?
“Does it go beyond reality”?
or just simply “Does it improve an image”?

Clearly a lot has been done to this image, personally I certainly would not enter the original photograph in a club competition. I would be happy though with the final result after Photoshop© editing.

The editing process only took about one hour, removing distractions (yellow tape & spectators), motion blur the whole image then masking back the car, adding a heavy vignette and boosting the saturation of “reds” in levels.

ADELAIDE ZOO, SUNDAY JULY 12 2009

Prior forecasts and reports were not promising for the Adelaide Zoo on Sunday July 12 2009. Weather forecast was for heavy showers and reports from some, suggested that the zoo is not at its best. However, as it turned out this was not the case, on both accounts.

I can’t remember the last time I was at the zoo, but for some reason I didn’t want to miss this day. That must have been the case for Stephen Robertson too, Steve was the FIRST person to arrive.

As it turned out, a total of 18 members and “honorary members” (family) gathered for the zoo opening at 9.30am. We all knew there would be an admission charge, but we didn’t anticipate an increase of $4 above the $22 Michael was advertising. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get Michael to come good to cover the difference for all.

After a group photo we all separated to explore the zoo at our own individual pace. However, there were many occasions we crossed paths – time to compare results, exchange photography tips, advice about the zoo or for some, a chance to recharge the “batteries” over morning tea from the café.

Personally, I made sure I got value for money, $26 for 7 ½ hours – not bad. That’s $3.47 per hour, 6 cents per minute, or .0009 cents per second!

A very enjoyable social outing was had by all

Catching the LIght by Andy Smylie

I have a small bookcase full of photographic magazines and books, as I am sure many of you do, but still like to look at the older copies of such mags when the opportunity presents itself. I hope the recent tradition of sharing unwanted photographic mags and books through the club continues.

Thanks to Ron Heptinstall (I think), I had the opportunity of reading some older copies of Layers magazine from March/April 2006.

I read with interest an article entitled "Rolling with the Changes" - four photographers share their insights for going digital. Since I was never into film photography, I am always interested in the discussion about "film versus digital". An interesting read if you can get hold of it.

Vincent Versace's contribution "Picture to Print" stuck in my mind. (equally relevant to film or digital capture):

"Midday is not for lunch - it's for scouting locations. Morning and early evening are not for breakfast or dinner - they're for shooting. That's when the light is best.

It's not the subject that you're photographing - it's the light that's falling on the subject. That's what's important."

Amen to that.

Morialta Falls – Conservation Park.

The First Official/Unofficial Outing - Saturday 13 June 2009, 8:30 am

Morialta Falls Conservation Park

A number of hardy Para Camera Club members braved the cold morning weather to explore the Morialta Conservation Park, the First Waterfall and surrounding area for a photo shoot. Canon’s and Nikon were evenly represented on this occasion and the rain held off, even lighting conditions were ideal for photography. The occasional Bird was sighted and a Sleepy Koala was also observed just above the Top Car Park. Some risked life and limb and a fine in the flowing waters to do much needed gardening to improve the bush landscape!!!! and our photographs of course.

Moonta Gang of Fourteen

In spite of dire weather predictions, Saturday dawned bright and sunny with the promise of spectacular clouds and an enjoyable day.

Fourteen intrepid souls met at the old Moonta Railway Station for the family photo and a briefing from that Oirish couple Pat and Mick. The mandatory tourist trip was taken on a little train around the old mine sites. All sorts of fascinating stories were told about the early days and how hard life was for the mine workers in the latter half of the Nineteenth Century. Did you know that the very first prospector to find copper in the area was a wombat? That little creature led the way for the two legged ones to follow.

Lunch, of course, consisted of traditional Cornish pasties in the local park, followed by visits to an old miner’s cottage where the guide Rosie, who was a descendant of the man who built it, proved to be a fount of interesting information. A trip to Hughes Engine house and chimney followed, where the clouds lived up to their promise.

In the course of the day Pat nicknamed Kath and I Kath and Kim but we didn’t like that so we called ourselves the Old Biddies (er I mean the Old Buddies); we heard Alberto’s family history; found out that Steve Robertson is nicknamed Rolly from his youthful days of rolling 4WDs; and Greg wouldn’t tell anyone where the house was with the beautiful blue and white gables that he had shots of (meanie).

By late afternoon, everyone was at Pt Hughes to photograph the jetty against the setting sun (we look forward to myriads of photos of same), Stephen (Rolly) was observed on the Beach trying the “Bounce Flash” technique off the darkening sky !!!!! under the guise of trying rear curtain sync. after which we repaired to the nearby Tavern for a meal.

After a very convivial evening El Presidente was heard to remark that he intended to ‘get up early in the morning to catch the sunset’! Durr !!

Altogether a great day with perfect conditions for taking photographs and – without a “CANON” in sight except the one we all passed on the left at the Army Proof Range Entrance, Pt. Wakefield. Pentax (2) , Nikon’s D40, D80, D90, D300, D700 and D3 ‘s Rejoice !!!!

Orange Lane Studios

A club visit to the Orange Lane Studios in Norwood enabled participants (about 15) to meet Mike Connell (founding partner) and share his enthusiasm and extensive knowlodge of photography.

I particularly enjoyed Mike's openness to discuss various aspects of photography from shooting fine art photographs on film to the latest trends in digital manipulation. Mike shared with us the some of the aspects of commercial photography including meeting customer expectations within the limits of technology and cost restraints.

The later part of the evening was eye opening as Mike shared with us the practical shooting of motor vehicles in the studio and the "construction" of the image in photoshop to the realization of the image we viewed on screen.

We were treated to a slide show of various photographs of "Living Design" - architectural interiors etc. Mike explained how he "engineered" the light to lead the viewer through the images of the various rooms within the homes he shoots.

A demo on the computer explained how Mike uses aspects of lighting and composition in his photography. A breif explaination of a couple of photoshop techniques rounded off the evining nicely and left a few of us rather reluctant to leave.

Thanks Mike for your enthusiasim and inspiration.

Kayaking at Garden Island

Sunday the 5^th April saw 9 members and two invited guests from the Red Bubble Community take to the waters in Kayaks of Garden Island with Phil the owner of Adventure Kayaking S.A, who gave an informative lecture about the wrecks and dolphins along the way.

The weather started out fine with a slight breeze, which created mini waves with the changing tide, with our cameras at the ready and with the wind at our backs

We made our way around the Island and headed for the wrecks, taking photos not only of the wrecks but of the members as well, we kept on paddling around to the Power Stations with many sightings of two dolphins, mum and baby.

Rain clouds were threatening and coming closer so we made our way back to the car park landing, whilst being escorted by the dolphins.

A great day was enjoyed by all with no mishaps, collisions or capsizing of kayaks and with no-one heading in the wrong direction.

We are looking for our next adventure, somebody has suggested “sky diving” over Willunga Jetty, just to get a different perspective of that well taken icon.!!!!
